Unless something really bizarre happens, I will not be at Gothic War.  I am glad as hell I did not spend the money for plane tickets to Atlanta.

I am on recall for state active duty orders, in preparation for Hurricane Gustav.  I am guessing this prep is so that we do not leave Texas citizens in the lurch and so that we can respond quickly and appropriately to any landfall of this storm.

That does not, however, mean that I am not pissed as hell.  I understand this is part of my job, but the next person who mentions it to me is going to get an Army retention coffee cup in an uncomfortable and intimate place.  Do not tell me I signed up for this.  I know that, however it does not mitigate the fact that I still would like to have a damn life and it doesn't actually make me feel any better.

Surely they need Guard presence in Sweetwater? :)
But seriously, that sucks.

Suck. :( although I'm sure you could find someone, somewhere who has the particular kink of liking getting an Army coffee mug shoved where the sun don't shine.

You know, I probably could find someone who'd like it. That just makes me shudder and giggle.

Okay, you had my complete sympathy... until I read the list of tags on this post and snorted coffee all over my keyboard.

Which tag was it that made you snork coffee?

The accumulation, taken as a whole, created a blustery, complaining, resigned sarcasm that reminds me most well of those moments we service was thrust upon me. I see your plight, understand it, and laughed, not cruelly, but in camaraderie. I hope Gustov avoids you.

Thank you! I actually looked at the tags I used and ended up cracking up.

I'm in a much better mood now.

But thank you. It's an absolute honor to serve my country and my fellow Texans.

Since you didn't fly to Atlanta, you can check the faire for Southwest from wherever you fly out of to Manchester, NH. on Jan. 30, 2009, returning on Feb. 1, 2009, unless you decide to stay longer.

It's Birka, the SCSA event that is practically a Con and is the best shopping this side of Pennsic.

It is held in a nice hotel with great airline connections.

WONDERFUL!

Another opportunity to excel and to serve your fellow Texans!

No offense, but I'm watching the satellite tracking on Gustav pretty closely myself. Hurricanes are no joke in the Caribbean and Central America. Given the "very light construction" techniques here, even a tropical wave can be a big problem.

Stay safe and keep us posted as you can.

It's not that I don't love what I do, it's just that God seems to think it's His job to mess with my plans. *facepalm*

If we're lucky, this will blow over, and we'll all be spun up for nothing. If not, we'll be where we need to be, hopefully before we need to be there.

I'll keep everyone updated.

It's all about the pre-positioning and mobilizing the troops sometime before there's a foot or three of water in the roads.

I assume you're just on alert for the moment.

I can't believe it! I wouldn't think they'd need to move you out anytime before Monday, so I would think Sunday would be sufficient prep time. They aren't even going to HAVE A CLUE about where Gustav will make Gulf landfall until about then, anyway! Oh, hun! *hugs*

You are welcome to come disappear out here with me, if you still want to get kind of away.

Ha, but when someone gets the notion to be prepared for anything, it's the not knowing (and therefore not being able to properly plan around it) that is the hardest on everybody else. :/

That, and the commanders I've worked with usually don't want to try to recall people off of vacation - they'd rather keep them home in the first place.

Bleah, all the same.

I keep forgetting it's a holiday weekend for some people out there.

I haven't really had a holiday since my husband deployed... I mean, there have been holidays, but they weren't fun times for me.

Date: 2008-08-29 06:19 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] deafelis.livejournal.com
Yeah, I can understand that. My husband is working all weekend, and since I don't get any time off for not working, it's not much of a weekend for me, either.

{reflective} That said, thanks for reminding me that at least I get to see him when he comes home at night. When does your husband come home? Also, may I friend you? (and stop hijacking soldiergrrrl's LJ ;) )

Pfft! I don't hijack her lj!

Sure, you can friend me if you want to; I'll even friend you back!

there are angry little men with bad haircuts who can't get a date locked in a basement room of the Pentagon, and their entire purpose in life is to monitor military family plans and write orders to screw them up? I work hard to foil their plans, but still figure they are going to win 3 out of 5 times...

Geeze, it's almost enough to make you wish the damned thing would hit. If it doesn't, if feels like you sacrificed for nothing. If you did have to go you could say, "I had to miss war, but at lease I ."
