So, what have I been doing in my spare time?  Besides wishing some Dallas peeps could go pick this up for me and hang on to it until I can get up there next weekend??

Well, working on a scroll.  Our Stronghold is holding our first event in August, and so, I decided we needed to do invites.  Personally, I blame [livejournal.com profile] zaphod_groupie , because our group got an invite to an event she was doing, and well...that kinda made me all keen on doing it too!

Well, because I am insano in the braino, I decided to take on the idea of making this invite.

I've done...three...scrolls. I think.

So, what else to do but go all out?  This is not inked yet, but it'll give you an idea.

Okay...this is the top left of the scroll, as you're looking at it:

This last one is the top right of the scroll, showing the top and side borders.

Thanks! I'm glad it's looking good. I'm all nervous about the painting but so far...I'm pretty happy!

Just remember to ink, make copies (at least two or three) THEN paint. then, you make colour copies of the one you painted. I promise this is the best route. NEVER paint your originals. Seriously. and I say make 2 or 3 initially, because you never know when you just decide you hate something, or there is a huge boo-boo.

It looks great :)

Do you go over the gold and silver then? I don't think the copier can make true copies of that?

Well, you have a couple options here.
For anyone other than your own Landed B&B, I would just make copies. No, the copier does not copy gold and silver to match exactly what the original looks like, but you have to remember something. 95% of the people who will receive these will simply toss the invite out.

However, the hand-done piece you are doing for the crown will probably be kept, as will likely the hand done piece you give your own landed.
Other than that, don't worry about them being hand-painted. Because again, the good majority of them will be tossed. (not being negative, just lending you my knowledge of the process having done all of it, and seen the end result of invites, etc.)

So the slight distortion of the actual gold and silver is fine. Don't worry about it. Good gold gouache is not cheap, and no reasonable person will ever give you a hard time over it. EVER.

If you want to, you can talk to Baroness Genevieve and Baron Duncan (both being laurels and both having done C&I for forever, including Duncan being the Star Signet - I think, I might be wrong I'm horrible with office titles! -) and they can give you some advice.

Presentation of the painted "original" (not your actual only-inked original) to your landed is most awesome, and if there are a couple you really want to present with painted ones, I suppose that is fine, but I would highly recommend limiting that. Especially in light that you are the only one painting, no? And knotwork and hatch work take a WHILE to paint and look great.

Don;t take on too much. The small flairs are amazing and remembered. The invites outside that small number are not often kept. So reserve your time and $ in materials with copies to other landeds.

Thanks! What you really want is my ability to trace. ;-) I'd feel bad, but manuscript makers in period did it too!!

Yes they did! Even with my ability to draw, I STILL use my light box a LOT. It's a huge time-saver.

Oh! I looked at that light table you posted, and emailed the guy, he said he has someone coming ot get it Monday or Tuesday, but would email me if they didn't come to get it.

It's remarkably like the one I got from a friend in Denton. If he emails me back that they skipped out, I can go grab it for you. If not, well, at least I tried?
