Ruminations on the SCA...

So, you might want to skip this if you're not interested in the Society.
I'm running into my usual "want to do too much, with too little time."
I want to fight. Yeah, need to get my ass out there and practice. I'll get right on that. After work and moving.
I want to sew. I'll do that, too, once I get the sewing room set up and find a place to cut out fabric.
I want to learn so much stuff, and I don't know where to start!
*flail*
How do you fit it all in, if you've got a job that eats your life, like mine can? Sersiously, I'm starting to think about packing a "handwork kit" to take on trips with me.

Date: 2008-08-15 03:33 pm (UTC)See? It's all good. And yes, I need to convert my black 1920s Singer to handcrank, so I can take it with me. And I need to put stuff in the car so I don't end up with time on my hands.

Date: 2008-08-15 04:18 pm (UTC)If yours has the coffin-top, you'll need to alter it a smidge so the hankcrank will fit. Otherwise, keep a screwdriver in there, and just take the handcrank off when you're packing up. (Me being the carpenter-type, I modified mine. I can modify yours, too, complete with the chipcarving on the back, but you'll have to send me the top.)
If you don't shuttle-tat, you might want to borrow a video from the library and learn. The lace form was present in that time period, and all your equipment literally fits into a pocket. Teeny things, tatting shuttles...

Date: 2008-08-15 04:08 pm (UTC)2)Stop. Breathe. Flailing spills your kit and guarantees that you'll end up with a needle in your foot ;)
3)Would anyone in your unit go for having fighter practice as PT?
4)Suggestion for learning: find a start point, then morph by saying "well, this is kinda sorta related..." I'm vaguely interested in herbal medicine. I got started on that with wondering how/why chicken soup works, and I could easily justify learning about dyes starting from food as well. Don't think of it as discrete puddles of knowledge: think of it as tributaries along the same river.
5)See 2 ;)
6)Remember that waiting is. You're young yet.

Date: 2008-08-16 12:37 am (UTC)I do however, tend more toward pursuing slow and steady the crafts I enjoy. I don't worry about awards, I don't worry about politics, I don't know the right people, my device and name still aren't registered - though not for lack of trying on my part - and I've never been recognized for volunteering although I frequently do. I do things I enjoy because I enjoy them. I camp when the weather is good for it, and the event is one I like or is promising. I brew mead because I like to drink it. I cook because I like to eat. I am attempting to make codials because that is something I can do at home, with little time-impact. I sew when I need new duds - or just spiffier ones. I read a lot of history just to work on getting my behavior and knowledge correct, though few notice and fewer probably care.
I don't get frustrated this way, but it might be a little too slow and unfocused for you.

Me, I go to very few events and have very little garb.

Date: 2008-08-16 04:27 am (UTC)That while doing: FAA job 6-2 M-F, College job 15-22 M-Th, Track job whenever there's concerts, usually 19-24 F-Sa. I'll get the debt knocked down and then it's project time.
Oh, and I'm accepted to the college's police academy, so I'll be re-shifting some of that work so I can do the classes 18-22 M-Th starting in Sept.

Date: 2008-08-19 12:45 am (UTC)That's because there's just TOO MUCH that I want to learn. (Someone asks "what are you interested in?" and I say "yes? everything?") :D And this is okay. I constantly have to remind myself that the people who have all of those awards and do chivalric and rapier and archery and and and... have mostly been in for 15-35 years. :p I've got T-I-M-E.... It just doesn't feel like it. ;)
:D So just fit in what you can, when you can, and don't feel guilty when you're too busy. You've got upwards of 20 years to learn it all in. Pick one thing to be the important thing for now (the one that trumps all others in regards to events and going places), and one thing to be the secondary-important thing (the one that you can work on at home), and one thing that is small enough that you can take it with you to work on wherever. :) Oh, and a couple of books to read when you just feel like sitting still and reading something historical. :)
BTW, I love your panicked hamster icon. :)
